San Lorenzo Valley High's football team pulled away from host Harbor in the second half and won 28-6 in its Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia Division opener on Friday night.

Sophomore running back Justin Griffis rushed for 100-plus yards and a pair of touchdowns for the unbeaten Cougars (5-0, 1-0), who are off to their best start since going 13-0 in 2002. Winston Wells also turned out some big runs, coach David Grant said.

Fausto Gonzales rushed for an 82-yard gain on a fake punt on Harbor's first drive to set up quarterback Luke Griffin's 3-yard scoring run.

The Pirates had the ball for nearly 10 minutes in the second quarter, but was unable to score. SLV led 7-6 at the half.

Gabe Machado had a touchdown reception and Jordan Renteria ran for a score for the Cougars.

"We played much better in the second half; we ran the ball well and played good 'D,' " Grant said. "Justin Griffis, our running back, had his best game. Harbor played really tough. I give their players and coaches a lot of credit."

SLV receiver Dom Aguilar hauled in "a clutch pass" from quarterback Jack Dagan on 4th-and-5 from midfield in the third quarter, Grant said.

"It was a close game at that point and I felt like that play gave us some much needed momentum," he said.

The Cougars didn't commit a turnover.

SLV's Riley Johnson and Aguilar recorded interceptions.

Gonzales finished with 150-plus yards rushing for the Pirates, and teammate Maxwell Falconer had 100 yards receiving.

Om Oct 12, Harbor (1-4, 0-2) plays at Pajaro Valley (2-3, 1-0) at 12:30 p.m., and SLV hosts Marina (1-4, 0-1) at 1 p.m.
