Snow possible in northern Illinois next week

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A blast of cold Canadian air could bring with it the first chance of snow in northern Illinois next week.

On average, Illinois tends to see its first snowfall around Thanksgiving, according to the University of Illinois.

Rockford's first measurable snow is normally anticipated around November 20th, and this year could be right on schedule, First Warn Meteorologist Joey Marino reported.

The region could see snow "possibly Wednesday into Thursday," Marino said. "A storm system could help unlock a very cold mass, giving a chance to see wintery precipitation."

According to data from the National Weather Service, the earliest snowfall ever recorded in the region occurred on October 12th, 1928.

In 1940, northern Illinois had to wait until January 7th to see its first snow, according to NWS data.
