South Carolina attorney general speaks on presidential immunity ruling

FLORENCE, S.C (WBTW) — South Carolina's top prosecutor on Tuesday weighed in on the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that former presidents have immunity for their official actions.

Republican Alan Wilson told News13 the high court's decision is not about a person, but protecting the office of a presidency.

His comments came a day after the landmark conclusion that protects ex-presidents from being prosecuted for "official acts" in office, no matter their "politics, policy, or party," but says that protection doesn't cover everything.

As for a president's unofficial acts, the ruling states there is no immunity. "They are basically saying there are some things you have immunity for, there are some things you don't have immunity for, and there are some things that you might have immunity for, but it depends on the facts," he said.

Wilson said he believes the Supreme Court did their best to thread the needle.

"You want to be able to allow the President to exercise their discretion without the fear of being persecuted and prosecuted by administrations that follow them that may not agree with them," he said.

Wilson said the Supreme Court recognizes there may be a time when a president does something that they don't have the authority to do at the same time as well.

Donald Trump's legal team has sinc asked for his recent conviction to be overturned.
