South Carolina climbs Coaches Poll in new update
Last week, Shane Beamer's South Carolina squad won its third SEC game in a row in blowout fashion. On Saturday, the Gamecocks didn't win in a lopsided manner; instead, quarterback LaNorris Sellers led his offense down the field for a 55-second touchdown drive (punctuated by a tremendous effort from Rocket Sanders at the goal line) to recapture the late lead over the Missouri Tigers.
With the big win, the Gamecocks are now 5-3 in SEC play and own a 7-3 overall record. They finished the SEC slate on a four-game winning streak and are 3-0 against former SEC East foes. This most recent USC victory was the team's fourth in a row overall Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Missouri), and it was the third in a row against an opponent ranked in the AP Poll (Texas A&M was ranked No. 10, Vanderbilt was No. 24, and Missouri also was 24th).
South Carolina is now the No. 19 team in the USA Today Coaches Poll as the Gamecocks moved up four slots from last week when the new poll was released early Sunday afternoon.
Last Sunday, South Carolina football made its 2024 debut in the AP Top 25. The AP voters slotted the Gamecocks into the No. 23 spot in the rankings, but some left Carolina out completely.
This week's update to the AP Poll will be released at around 2 p.m. on Sunday.
After being unranked in the very first College Football Rankings of the year, South Carolina was No. 21 the second time 'round. The third iteration of the poll that matters most will come out on Tuesday night. Fans can tune in to watch the selection show at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN or the ESPN app.
Next up on the schedule are two in-state matchups that will conclude the 2024 regular season. The Gamecocks must win both to have a chance (albeit a small one) of making the College Football Playoff. They will welcome the Wofford Terriers to Williams-Brice Stadium for the final home contest of the year this Saturday. Then, South Carolina will travel to the Upstate for a date with the rival Clemson Tigers.
This weekend's non-conference tilt against Wofford is available only through streaming (or through attendance). Gamecocks who will not be inside Willy B can watch on ESPN+, SEC Network+, ESPN.com, or the ESPN app. Kickoff is slated for the 4:00 p.m. afternoon slot.
