T.Lee34 min ago

A South Dakota man has been indicted on federal charges for allegedly assaulting a two-month-old infant, causing serious injuries.

Sinte White Butterfly, 25, of Pine Ridge, was indicted in September 2024 and pleaded not guilty to the charges on September 30, 2024. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years, with a maximum penalty of life in prison. He could also be fined up to $250,000 and be subject to five years of supervised release.

The charges stem from an incident in August 2024. Due to the Major Crimes Act, a federal law requiring certain violent crimes in Indian Country to be prosecuted in federal court, the U.S. Attorney's Office is handling the case.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the incident. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Lindrooth is prosecuting the case.

White Butterfly is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service while awaiting trial. A trial date has not yet been set.
