South Walton Fire District hosts annual Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. ( WMBB ) – The South Walton Fire District is serving all-you-can-eat pancakes for their 10th annual pancake breakfast fundraiser.

While they serve pancakes, the South Walton Fire District is educating the public about fire prevention to kick off Fire Prevention Week starting on Sunday.

During the week, they will go to schools and daycares to educate kids about fire safety.

The Florida Forest Service is the expert on wildfires.

Before starting a fire, they say it's important to know the laws about what distance it has to be from the woods and other property.

Fire Marshal Sammy Sanchez says the event allows the community to meet their firefighters in a non-emergency setting.

"I think the biggest thing that we're trying to do is get folks to understand that fire safety starts with them. It starts in their own house. We can have a pancake breakfast. We can go to every school in town. But it's got to start at home," Fire Marshal Sammy Sanchez said.

Kids suited up in firefighter jackets to complete the junior firefighter challenge.

They raced through cones carrying fire gear and used the fire hose to practice their aim. They also could look into the touch-a-truck to see a closer look at a firefighter's job.

The proceeds from the pancake breakfast will go towards buying more public education materials.
