SOUTHINGTON, CT — A local police department program aimed at helping Southington's finest cope with the emotional rigors of a difficult job garnered statewide attention last week.

On Wednesday, Oct. 9, the Connecticut Chiefs of Police Association had its annual Officer Wellness Symposium in New Haven, with the Southington Police Department's Peer Support Team formally presented with the "Serve Well, Be Well" Award.

The SPD's Peer Support Program was initiated in 2017, and spearheaded by SPD Sgt. Jeffrey Ward, who recognized the overall importance of officer wellness from very early on.

"Ward and his teammates have stood committed to promoting the well-being of fellow first responders near and far ever since," wrote the SPD in a recent announcement.

Ward will be stepping down from his leadership position on the team and will pass the baton to Det. Thomas Atterato.

"Sgt. Ward, we would like to extend a whole-hearted thank you for your service and dedication to all of us in this capacity throughout the years.," wrote the SPD in a statement.
