NEW HOPE, PA - A misty light rain brought out the umbrellas Sunday night for the town’s annual tree lighting and Santa’s official arrival, but it failed to dampen the town’s holiday spirit.

Framed by giant ornament and holiday lights, musicians set the stage for the magical evening performing holiday carols in front of the Logan Inn at Ferry and South Main streets.

Students from the New Hope-Solebury School District opened their performance with the songs, “In the Bleak Midwinter” and “Carol of the Bells.”

As the showers increased in intensity, so did the anticipation of Santa’s arrival. Soon, sirens could be heard in the distance as New Hope’s Eagle Fire Company escorted the man of the hour down Main Street.

With sirens wailing and lights flashing, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived at the Logan to a wet, but wildly enthusiastic crowd of children and parents on the Ferry Street side of the Logan.

Following Santa's arrival, Mayor Larry Keller stepped to the microphone to thank the Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce, Maggie Smith from the Logan Inn, and Frank and Jeanne Cretella, the owners of the Logan, for putting together and hosting the event.

The Mayor then joined a group of youngsters in counting down to the lighting of the tree.

"Is everyone ready to light this tree?" the mayor asked, as he joined the crowd in counting down from 10.

"Merry Christmas everyone," he said as the tree came alive with lights.

After the official lighting, Santa and Mrs. Claus made their way inside the Logan where they greeted youngsters for the next half an hour and listened to their Christmas wishes. Each child received a candy cane and a coloring and activity book to take home.

For those who missed Santa’s arrival on Sunday evening, there's a second chance to welcome Santa this Sunday, Dec. 3.

The New Hope Holiday Parade will step off at 4 p.m. from the New Hope-Solebury High School on Bridge Street. The parade will them march south on Main Street.

Both the tree lighting and holiday parade are organized and sponsored by the Greater New Hope Chamber of Commerce. The tree lighting is also sponsored by the Logan Inn.
