Red Barons announce staff
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons have announced their coaching staff
for the 2001-2002 season.
Manager Marc Bombard and hitting coach Jerry Martin will return. Joining
the staff are pitching coach Gorman Heimueller and trainer Craig Strobel.
Bombard has a career record of 341-310 with the Barons.
Heimueller is entering his fourth season with the Phillies’ organization.
He last worked with the Barons in 2000. He spent the 2001 season with AA
Reading.
The Philadelphia Phillies also announced their minor league coordinators:
Bill Dancy, field; Gary Ruby, pitching; Don Long, hitting; Ruben Amaro Sr.,
defense; Mick Billmeyer, catching; and Milt Thompson, outfield/base running.
PENN STATE
Crispin on Lakers’ IR list
Penn State’s second all-time leading scorer, Joe Crispin, has earned a spot
on the opening-day roster of the Los Angeles Lakers, but has been placed on
injured reserve for the Lakers.
Crispin was a four-year starter for Penn State and led the team to two NIT
finals and the school’s first modern-day NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
Cougars capture PAC honors
Six members of College Misericordia’s Pennsylvania Athletic Conference
runner-up women’s soccer team, including two local graduates, have earned
All-PAC honors.
Lake-Lehman grad Sara Rittenhouse was one of three players named to the
first team, while Tunkhannock product Erin Wiernusz was part of a trio
selected to the second team.
Cole Vennie of Selinsgrove and Erica Noel of South Plainfield joined
Rittenhouse on the first team, while Carolyn Muller of Maryland and Angela
Neff of Stroudsburg were on the second team.
Rittenhouse, a sophomore, started 13 games at back for the Cougars. She
anchored a defense which allowed just 0.73 goals per game.
Vennie, a freshman forward, led the team and the PAC in scoring with 46
points on 19 goals and eight assists while setting school single-season rec
ords for goals and points.
Noel, a senior goalkeeper, earned All-PAC honors for the fourth consecutive
season. She rec orded four shutouts and posted a 0.80 goals-against average.
Wiernusz, a freshman midfielder, had 25 points on eight goals and nine
assists.
Muller, a freshman, was selected as a midfielder. She had 30 points on 11
goals and eight assists.
Neff, a junior sweeper, was also a second-team selection as a freshman. A
defensive stalwart, she added two goals and two assists.
