ICE HOCKEY
Pee Wee team wins twice
The Pocono Pirates Pee Wee ice hockey team picked up a pair of victories
during the weekend.
On Saturday, Nick Zaino, of Pittston, scored two goals to lead the Pirates
past the Delaware Junior Blue Hens 5-4 at the Ice Box in Jenkins Township. Ken
Suchoski also scored a pair of goals for the Pirates. Max Van Gorder, of
Wallenpaupack, scored one goal.
On Sunday, the Pirates routed the Pottstown Penguins 8-0 at the Ice Box.
Jim Hockenbury, of Wilkes-Barre, led the winners with one goal and two
assists. Brian Higgs, of Mountaintop, had two goals for the Pirates. Single
goals were added by Ricky Rose, of Shavertown; Ray Spiccioli, of Pittston;
Kevin Zirnheld, of Mountaintop; Eric Wroblewski, of Dallas; and Van Gorder.
The Pirates take on the Delco Phantoms tomorrow at the Ice Works in Aston.
PAC salutes Marywood duo
Marywood University’s Jennifer Whaley, a Wyoming Area graduate, and Ann
Marie Ashton, a Hanover Area graduate, were among nine Marywood students named
to the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference all-star tennis squad.
Whaley, who also won the conference singles title, was named to the singles
first team. Whaley had a record of 12-1 on the season.
Ashton was named to the first team for doubles.
The Pacers finished the season ranked second in the PAC, only the second
time in 10 years that the Pacers have not won the championship.
Cougar women picked 2nd
Misericordia College’s women’s basketball team is picked to finish second
in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference North Division, according to the PAC
preseason coaches poll.
Gwynedd-Mercy is picked to win the North Division and capture its third
consecutive conference title.
The remainder of the PAC North forecast is: Alvernia, third; Marywood,
fourth; Arcadia, fifth; and Cedar Crest, sixth.
WATER POLO
WVW boys seek Pa. title
The Wyoming Valley West’s boys water polo team will compete in the
Pennsylvania Water Polo championships today and Saturday at the Gov. Mifflin
Middle School, in Shillington.
Wyoming Valley West, which is seeded eighth, qualified for states as a wild
card by tying for third place in the Eastern Division. The Spartans are in the
A pool with Wilson, Cathedral Prep and Souderton.
Valley West will start round-robin play, beginning with Cathedral Prep at 7
p.m. today. The Spartans will play Wilson at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow and Souderton
at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow.
The top team from the round robin will play for the championship. The
runner- up will play for third place.
Dallas man records ace
Bill Skammer, of Dallas, recently shot a hole in one on the 121-yard No. 4
hole at the former Mount Airy Resort.
The 7-iron shot was witnessed by Jack Williams and Don Burke.
