Sports Update - Wednesday, November 6th
The Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame has announced its class of 2025. Nine individuals will be inducted, and they are Clark Andres of Roblin, Lindsey & Matthew Dahl of Winnipeg, Ryan Scott of Irishtown, New Brunswick, Scott Kelman of Winnipeg, Jim White of Neepawa, Fred Matsubara of Winnipeg, Jack Scott of Winnipeg and Golden West sportscaster Clayton Dreger. The team inductees include the 2012-2018 Brandon Cardinals who won the Brandon Senior AA League championship five times; the Crocus Plains Plainsmen who captured the Provincial High School Baseball Championship three times between 2003-2006 and Manitoba's 1985 Canada Summer Games team that brought home silver from Saint John, New Brunswick. The Clayton family - Stewart Clayton, along with sons Wilf, Randy & Greg, who were inducted with the 1974-78 Kaleida K's teams, will also be added to Hall of Fame. The Altona Baseball Builders, who had the vision and passion to take on the Field of Dreams project will also be inducted. Over a decade and a half, the committee carried out the fundraising and much of the construction work for Access Field which is one of most attractive ball parks in our province. Bill Kirkup & Murray Zuk of Souris and Al Robertson of Hamiota will be saluted as Honourary Life Members. The 27th Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Banquet will be held June 14th at the Access Event Centre in Morden which is the home of the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame's Museum.
Easton Eggie had two goals and an assist as the Swan Valley Tigers defeated the Major Pratt Trojans 4-1 in the lone Westman High School Hockey League game Tuesday night in Russell. Rylan Laderoute and Sam Lacasse also scored for the Tigers. Raphael Mowbray replied for the Trojans.
Team Manitoba will face Ontario Red in the quarterfinals of the 2024 U18 Women's National Hockey Championship Thursday morning in Quispamsis, New Brunswick. Kate Manness of La Salle and Hayley McDonald of East St. Paul scored early in the first period and Eastman Selects netminder Addison Tomes of Winnipeg made 28 saves as Manitoba defeated Ontario Blue 2-1. Team Manitoba finished the preliminary round in fourth place in Group B with one win and two losses.
Waywayseecappo Wolverines forward Dru Mushumanski scored twice and Niverville Nighthawks goaltender Raiden LeGall stopped 26 of 28 shots as Team MJHL downed Team SJHL 4-2 at the Western All-Star Showcase in Warman, Saskatchewan. Matthew Thomas of the Dauphin Kings and Blake Matheson of the Winkler Flyers also scored for Team MJHL. The Showcase ends today as the two teams meet again at 11:30 a.m.
Nino Niederreiter scored two goals in his 900th NHL game and the Winnipeg Jets blanked Utah 3-0 at Canada Life Centre. Gabriel Vilardi also scored for the Jets who have won four in a row and are 12-1 on the season. Winnipeg captain Adam Lowry chipped in with two assists. Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves in recording his 39th career shutout.
