Spurs' Victor Wembanyama a Giannis Antekounmpo, Anthony Davis mix, per Nic Batum
San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama is a freak of nature.
At his size , he shouldn't be able to do the things he's been doing on the floor. The scary part is that he's barely scratched the surface of his potential. Even after he was selected first overall by San Antonio in the 2023 NBA Draft, the hype is still there for Wembanyama, with fans and players continuing to express their amazement of the first-year big man.
Just take for example veteran Philadelphia 76ers forward Nic Batum, who mentioned the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo , Anthony Davis , and Kristaps Porzingis to encapsulate his view of his compatriot.
“I really can’t choose one player but we can see some AD, we can see some Porziņģis and can see a little bit of Giannis so sometimes we can see a little bit of a couple of players,” Batum said of the Spurs star, via Brandon Scoop B Robinson.
“I think that he’s going to be a better version of Porziņģis. When I first saw him? He actually took pride in playing defense and I’m pretty sure that he’s like, Rudy is a great defender but I want to be BETTER than Rudy because he’s more versatile on defense. Rudy’s great on defense but I think that he’s more versatile on defense than Rudy,” Batum added.
While Wembanyama has all the tools he needs, Batum still knows that it's still up to the San Antonio sensation how he'll use those to realize his terrifying potential in the NBA.
“He has all the potential to be great to what he wants to be but, at the end he’s going to be his own version of himself and that’s special.”
Of course, there is still so much to learn for Victor Wembanyama in the NBA. Growing pains are to be expected, as he continues to get acclimated to the atmosphere of the most talented basketball league in the world. Despite Wembanyama's talents and abilities, the Spurs still have only three wins after 17 games.
So far in the 2023-24 NBA regular season, Wembanyama is leading the Spurs with 19.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 1.3 steals and 2.6 blocks per contest.
