`Star Trek' Auction Sets Records, Netting $3.6 Million

An auction featuring memorabilia from the iconic 1960s television show "Star Trek" and the film adaptations and television spinoffs that followed fetched a total of $3.6 million, with many items bringing in far more than their estimates, officials said Sunday.

"Bid Long & Prosper," a live and online auction held Saturday at Infinity Festival in Hollywood, included more than 200 original props, costumes and other memorabilia.

Among the highlights, according to Julien's Auctions, were:

— Captain James T. Kirk' long-lost phaser from the original TV series sold for $910,000 (nine times its original estimate of $100,000), a new world record for a "Star Trek" prop sold at auction;

— Kirk's communicator sold for $780,000 (nearly eight times its original estimate of $100,000);

— The Captain's USS Enterprise helm and navigation console from the original series commanded $260,000 (five times its original estimate of $50,000);

— Kirk's burnt yellow velour tunic and Starfleet Command Bridge trousers worn by actor William Shatner in the first season of the television series sold for $455,000 (seven times its original estimate of $65,000);

— A vintage red velour female engineering duty uniform as worn by a member of Starfleet (which may have been intended for actress Nichelle Nichols, who played Nyota Uhura) sold for $114,300 (38 times its estimate of $3,000);

— Actor Leonard Nimoy "Spock" robe and headband from the 1986 film "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" sold for $45,500 (more than four times its estimate of $10,000).

Leading up to the auction, Julien's celebrated the legacy of "Star Trek" with Infinity Festival Nov. 6-9, which included an exhibition of highlighted items, a speakers session, a special never-before-seen Dolby Cinema version director's cut screening of 1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," and more.
