State police plan DUI checkpoint, roving patrols in Berks through November

State police plan a sobriety checkpoint this month at an undisclosed location in Berks County as well as ramped-up roving DUI patrols, troopers from the Reading station announced Wednesday.

The goal of a checkpoint is to reduce the number of impaired drivers on state roads and prevent alcohol- and drug-related fatal and serious crashes, officials said.

At a checkpoint, troopers will systematically stop vehicles at a selected location and observe drivers for signs and behaviors associated with alcohol or drug impairment.

An eagled-eyed husband and wife were sailing in Hawaii when they spotted mysterious objects in the distance. Camila and Ryan Sullivan found five scuba divers drifting at sea. They told their rescuers that they were on a diving excursion. When they surfaced, they realized that they drifted away and their dive boat was nowhere to be found. The couple tried to pull them to safety but the sea was too rough. They radioed the U.S. Coast Guard. Twenty minutes later, help finally arrived.

A judge recused himself Tuesday from presiding over Arizona's fake electors case after an email surfaced in which he told fellow judges to speak out against attacks on Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign for the presidency. An arrest report gives more details about what occurred before a man was shot to death Wednesday in the 3200 block of West Edgewood Avenue. Investigators observed surveillance video that showed the victim driving an orange Chevrolet Camaro with orange rims at the intersection of Edgewood Avenue and New Kings Road, according to the JSO arrest report for Lavertis Reed, 20, who was charged with murder in the shooting. As the victim's vehicle crossed the intersection, a white vehicle with dark rims was observed on the surveillance video driving south at a high rate of speed on New Kings Road, the arrest report states.

The president of Tuskegee University in Alabama announced Monday that the school is being closed to outsiders and that its security chief has been fired in the wake of a mass shooting Sunday on campus.
