LONGVIEW, Texas (KLTV) - The state has rested its case in the punishment phase for Gregory Newson, who has been found guilty of the 2019 murder of Panola County Deputy Chris Dickerson. They are expected to provide rebuttal evidence.

The state's final witness was Gary Gremillion, a retired corrections officer for the State of Louisiana. Gremillion said Newson was moved to a higher-level security prison when he was incarcerated in the 1990s and was a "chronic disciplinary problem."

The defense gave their opening statement before the court broke for lunch. They are asking the jury to sentence Newson to life in prison without the possibility of parole, as opposed to the death penalty.

Newson's attorney Rick Hagan says evidence will show Newson has "significant subaverage intellectual functioning."

Hagan said members of Newson's family are expected to testify.
