Sports Steelers Injury Report: Updates on Harris, Highsmith

The Pittsburgh Steelers have weathered the storm of injuries this season, particularly up front. Between guard Isaac Seumalo missing the first four weeks of the season to rookie right tackle Troy Fautanu watching his season end early, they haven't had the best of luck, especially up front.

Those woes continued when center Zach Frazier went down with an ankle in Week 6's win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

With more turmoil up front and an upgraded New York Jets team coming to town for Sunday Night Football, Pittsburgh will once again lean on its depth. It will also hope for continued progress on a handful of injured veterans as Wild Card implications hang in the balance.

On Wednesday, the team released its first injury report of the week.

DID NOT PARTICIPATE

  • Running Back Najee Harris (Ribs)
  • Safety Damontae Kazee (Ankle)
  • Edge Rusher Nick Herbig (Hamstring)
  • Center Zach Frazier (Ankle)
  • Running Back Cordarrelle Patterson (Ankle)
  • Guard Isaac Seumalo (Rest)
  • Edge Rusher T.J. Watt (Rest)
  • Defensive Tackle Cameron Heyward (Rest)
  • Defensive Tackle Larry Ogunjobi (Rest)
  • Edge Rusher Alex Highsmith (Groin)
  • Tight End MyCole Pruitt
  • Per usual, a cast of veterans got the day of practice off, so there's no concern there. But running back Najee Harris was a surprise addition with a rib injury. He was arguably Pittsburgh's best player in Sin City, running for 106 yards and a score in the win. At this point, his placement is more of something to monitor than something to worry about. Given the state of the Steelers backfield, his absence would loom large.

More concerning is the absence of Frazier who, as a rookie, has stepped in and performed admirably. His ankle injury put him in a walking boot, and he's considered week-to-week. Pittsburgh must prepare to be without him against a solid Jets defensive line.

On a positive note, Highsmith's participation should have him on track for Sunday. According to Nick Farabaugh , the edge rusher was pain-free on Wednesday and fully expects to play. With Herbig listed as a DNP, getting Highsmith back will be important.

With Pittsburgh and New York competing for the same Wild Card spots, getting healthy and escapinging with a nationally televised win could have season-long implications.
