Sports Steelers Rookie Injured, Status vs. Chargers In Doubt

With the Pittsburgh Steelers' home opener against the Los Angeles Chargers just days away, the team could be without a key starter on the offensive line.

During Friday's practice, rookie tackle Troy Fautanu reportedly tweaked his knee and left practice early. Fautanu was set to make his second career start at right tackle against Los Angeles on Sunday, but now his status is in doubt.

Tackle Broderick Jones, who the team selected in the first round of the 2023 draft, will likely get the start at right tackle if Fautanu is not able to play. Following practice, Jones was uncertain of Fautanu's status.

"We really don't know what his status is going to be," Jones said. "I filled in for him and then just going to roll from there after he gets his MRI and stuff, and we'll just figure out what's going on from there... The coach is going to make the decision at the end of the day. We've got two days, he got a day and a half to rest, whatever it is. I really don't even know what happened to him."

Jones and Fautanu had originally been rotating in and out at right tackle to begin the season, but after Jones struggled with penalties in the Steelers' Week 2 win, Fautanu was kept in for the remainder of the game, and was set to start for Week 3.

The team likely won't make a decision on Fautanu until closer to game-time at 1 P.M. EST on Sunday.
