Sports Steve Sarkisian Named to the Paul 'Bear' Bryant Coach of the Year Watch List

Steve Sarkisian has put all of the pieces together for a potential national championship run at Texas, and he's earning recognition. He was named to the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award watch list for the best head coach in the country.

Six other SEC head coaches were named to the watch list, including Alabama's Kalen DeBoer, Texas A&M's Mike Elko, Tennessee's Josh Heupel, LSU's Brian Kelly, Vanderbilt's Clark Lea, and Georgia's Kirby Smart.

A Texas head coach hasn't won the award since 2005, when Mack Brown led the Longhorns to a 13-0 record and a Rose Bowl win over USC.

Sarkisian has led the Longhorns to a 6-0 record this season and a stellar 18-2 record since the beginning of the 2023 season at Texas. This week, the Longhorns host Kirby Smart's Georgia team, which provides a significant litmus test for Sarkisian.

If the Longhorns continue on their current trajectory, the coaches and players in Austin will be in store for several honors and awards.
