Storm opens the season with pair of extra-time setbacks

PITTSBURGH — The Tri-City Storm opened the season with a pair of losses at the DICK'S Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, but came away with two points in the standings by taking both games to extra time.

Thursday, the Storm lost to the Dubuque Fighting Saints, 3-2, in a shootout.

Tri-City claimed a 2-0 lead when Cameron Briere found the back of the net at the 8-minute, 19-second mark of the first period and Landon Fandel scored at 1:57 of the second period.

Dubuque answered with two goals before the end of the second period and neither team scored after that until the shootout.

Both teams took 27 shots in the game, but Tri-City was hampered by an 0-for-6 performance on the power play.

In the season opener on Wednesday, the storm lost, 4-3, in overtime to the Youngstown Phantoms as K. Voronin scored at 4:43 in the first overtime period.

Tri-City jump to a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by AJ Lacroix and Ilya Morozov., but Youngstown rallied for three goals in the second period to take the lead.

Tri-City tied it at 15:23 of the third period on a goal by Colby Woogk.

Tri-City and Dubuque will have a rematch in the Storm's next game, Sept. 27 at Dubuque. The Storm's first home game is slated for Oct. 4 against the Madison Capitols.
