Study looking at ways to address high Cornwall-Lebanon student interest in career, tech center

: Cornwall-Lebanon school board meeting, Sept. 16.

What happened: The Cornwall-Lebanon School District has about 200 students who want to attend the Lebanon County Career and Technology Center but cannot because of capacity limits, board President Ruth Ann Schlegel told fellow board members.

: The career and tech center assesses students using a standardized rubric it created, and those with the highest points are invited to attend, depending on the number of seats available in their chosen program, Amy Rose Wissinger, Cornwall-Lebanon spokesperson, said via email after the meeting. Because of the high level of interest, she said the career and tech center is looking into ways to serve more students.

: "Recognizing that demand for enrollment has been increasing beyond capacity available, the (career and tech center board) commissioned a multifaceted feasibility study this spring to assess facility needs and examine curriculum for high school students," Wissinger said.

What's next: "The findings of the study are expected later this year or early next year," Wissinger said.

Bus loop closing: The district will close the Cedar Crest Middle School bus loop from Sept. 23 through Sept. 27 due to deliveries of structural steel for the Falcon Connector project, Superintendent Phil Domencic told the board.

: The Falcon Connector project will connect the middle and high schools and add 22 classrooms to the campus, according to the district website. The district will use the area as a flexible space while workers renovate the middle and high schools in the future. After renovations are complete, the area will have a "variety of future uses," the website says.

: The district may have to close the bus loop several more times throughout the year, due to the project Domencic said. There will be some adjustments to pickup and drop-off locations, Wissinger said, which will be shared with families using the district's Skylert notification system. The district expects "minimal disruption," she said.
