Veterans and their families can continue enjoying free bus rides around El Paso thanks to a grant boost from a statewide veterans advocacy organization.

Sun Metro on Wednesday announced that it received an additional $50,000 to extend its free ride program for veterans and their families, effectively doubling an initial grant the transit service had received.

El Paso's total share of the Texas Veterans Committee General Assistance Grant is now $100,000.

According to the city, the additional funds will be used to continue providing free rides for veterans and their dependents on Sun Metro's Fixed Routes and the LIFT paratransit service.

"Our continued efforts to provide accessible transportation options reflect our commitment to serving the veterans in our community. We are proud to reinstate this program to support Veterans and their families," said Sun Metro Director Anthony Dekeyzer.

More than 250 veterans and their families have already received support, the city said, adding "many more are expected to benefit from this free-ride program."

To apply, or check an application's status, veterans and their dependents/spouses can call Sun Metro at 915-212-3333 or click .
