Supports Trex Proffitt’s candidacy for state Senate [letter]

Over the past five-plus years, I have advocated for changing the fair funding model and more equitably resourcing all of Pennsylvania's public schools.

Even though I will proudly continue to advocate for the School District of Lancaster, it has felt like banging my head against the wall. Our current state senator — who wielded his power as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee to block our state budget when Gov. Josh Shapiro eliminated a proposed private-school voucher program — has absolutely no time for anyone who doesn't agree with him. And when he does, it is full of rhetoric and disdain.

Imagine how refreshed I was to learn that my friend Trex Proffitt decided to throw his hat in the ring as a candidate in the state's 13th Senate District — a uniquely gerrymandered district that encompasses parts of Lancaster and Berks counties. A once self-identified "long shot" write-in contestant, Trex is a dedicated and hardworking candidate.

Trex is a lifelong educator, passionate about providing commonwealth students with the resources and support they need to succeed. He prioritizes removing obstacles to learning and believes that investing in our youth is essential for building a better future.

As a former business professor, Trex also understands how business and economies work. He knows that well-paying jobs, adequate and affordable housing, safe and accessible health care, and education are the backbones of a healthy society.

Even better, Trex is not in the back pocket of charter schools and vouchers special interest groups. Trex knows that privatization of education will only increase current inequities and do further harm to our whole community. Yes, even a current Quaker school teacher advocates that there should be no additional monies toward these special interests until our public schools are fully and fairly funded.

Moreover, Trex has commonsense convictions and absolute-musts, which include creating inclusive spaces of belonging for all. Those are values that have drawn us to work collaboratively, and I know his fresh perspective will make a difference.

Join me in these final weeks before the election, and explore Trex's profile. Visit trexforsenate.com . See what he is all about and tell a friend.

Please remember to vote Nov. 5. Our democracy depends on it.

Jen Van Buskirk Eaton
