Suspect dead after shooting, throwing pipe bombs at police during chase
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — One person is dead and a police officer has been hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday in Jackson County.
According to the Jackson Police Department , the department was notified by the Lenawee County Sheriff's Office shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday that a shooting suspect was driving toward Jackson County. That driver had allegedly shot their brother less than an hour earlier.
JPD officers spotted the vehicle and coordinated with the Jackson County Sheriff's Office to plan a stop. Once officers tried to pull the driver over, the suspect started shooting at them and throwing explosives from the vehicle. Several other vehicles and homes were hit, but no bystanders were injured.
One shot eventually hit a JPD sergeant, going through his arm and into his body. A deputy from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office took the officer to a hospital. He was last listed in good condition.
"Converging officers and deputies were able to stop the suspect. Multiple shots were fired during the attempt to apprehend him," the Jackson Police Department said in a statement . "During the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was shot and incapacitated; no other officers or deputies were shot.
"Life-saving efforts were performed on scene on the suspect. The suspect was taken to Henry Ford Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased."
Investigators found several pipe bombs inside the suspect's vehicle, the explosives that they suspect were being thrown at responding officers during the pursuit.
Investigators do not know how many explosives the suspect had and said there may be devices along the road that did not detonate.

"If you see these items, do not pick them up. Contact 911 so that the appropriate personnel can be dispatched to handle the items," JPD stated.
Michigan State Police is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. As is common protocol, the deputies and officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while internal investigations are performed.
As of Thursday morning, JPD had yet to publicly identify the suspect or that person's brother, who was involved in the initial shooting.
