Swanzey man, 75, injured while hunting deer with son
Nov. 4—Conservation officers helped a Swanzey man after he suffered a head injury Saturday while hunting deer with his son in Wilton, officials said.
Just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Fish and Game dispatchers were notified of a hunter injured on the west side of Fisk Hill in Wilton.
The hunter, identified by conservation officers as Vaughn Stewart, 75 of Swanzey, was helping haul his son's deer out of the woods when he "slipped on leaves while descending down a steep hill," conservation officers said in a news release.
"Vaughn suffered a head injury and at the time was unable to walk out of the woods," Fish and Game officials said.
Vaughn was located approximately three-quarters of a mile away from the closest parking area "in a very difficult area to access," officials determined after his son called 911 from a cellphone.
Along with conservation officers, members of Wilton Fire Department and Wilton Ambulance Service responded. Vaughn was treated by a paramedic and helped down the hillside and placed into a UTV, which transported him the rest of the way to a parking area.
He arrived at the parking area shortly after 9:45 p.m., and was taken by Wilton Ambulance to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center for further evaluation.
The deer was also recovered and hauled out to the parking area by conservation officers and Wilton firefighters, officials said.
