A pair of cats named Lemon and Lime are up for adoption — but "don't let their sour names fool you."

"These two are sweet as sugar," a North Carolina animal shelter wrote Sept. 20 on Facebook. "They're a bonded pair and we would LOVE to have them in a home together."

The Yancey County Humane Society said Lemon and Lime are ready for their next chapter after living at a home with more than a dozen other cats. They arrived at the shelter in late summer as their owner went into assisted living, according to kennel manager Bailey Worley.

"Where ever Lemon goes, who is the female, Lime follows pretty much," Worley told McClatchy News in a phone interview. "And anyone that she's interested in, he's going to be interested in. He's a lot more, I think, traumatized by coming into the shelter environment than she was."

The cats, believed to be 6-year-old siblings, have become known for their timid and "mellow" nature. The shelter thinks their older age and shyness have led to them getting no interest.

"They weren't very used to consistent human interaction," Worley said, adding that it can "sometimes be overwhelming" when strangers try to pet them.

As of Sept. 23, the overlooked brother and sister cats were still available for adoption at the shelter in Burnsville, a roughly 35-mile drive northeast from the mountain town of Asheville.

"I don't feel like he's going to do well in a home where (he's) without her," Worley said. "They definitely comfort each other."

More details about the shelter's adoption process can be found at yanceyhumanesociety.org .
