Talk to reveal man who helped 6,000 Wicklow people during Great Famine
S.Brown30 min ago
From 1847 to 1856, Lord Fitzwilliam arranged assisted passage to Canada for 6,000 men, women and children from his 80,000 acre Coolattin Estate in Wicklow. Most were destitute on arrival in Quebec and New Brunswick. Despite good intentions there were terrible misunderstandings. The book describes the clearances and how some of the families got on in Canada. Ashford Historical Society is seeking photographs of people, places and items of historical interest relating to the Ashford and Glenealy area along with stories regarding their origin and significance. All the photographs will be returned to their owners afterwards. The talk by Jim Rees takes place in Ashford Community and Heritage Centre on Tuesday, November 26, starting from 7.30pm.
