Tarpon Springs High School band heads to National Championships
TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. (WFLA) — For the second time in two years, the Tarpon Springs High School band is headed to the National Championships.
Around 200 students boarded the busses Wednesday morning to hit the road to Indianapolis.
Everyone was excited to get to their competition and show off all of their hard work. The marching band and outdoor performance ensemble have been working around the clock leading up to the 2024 Grand National Championships.
"We've been working our butts off this season, so we're just ready to show the nation what we have," said Drum major Mathew Olaoia.
"They've worked tirelessly, it's been methodical, diligent efforts over the course of the entire year. This started back in May," said Dr. Timothy Sexton, Associate Director of Bands.
"We're just so pumped after all the stuff we've been through this season, it's such a blessing we get to perform on Saturday in front of one of the best crowds in the nation. So, we're really excited," said Nick Suriano, who is a senior and plays the saxophone.
Hurricanes Helene and Milton brought extra obstacles as these students were trying to prepare for competitions.
"Definitely a big obstacle, but just such an amazing directional staff and so much motivation to be the best versions of ourselves. So, we were able to push through," Suriano said.
They are just one of two bands representing Florida and placed in the top five in the nation back in 2022.
"We're just so much more experienced, when we went in 2022 none of us had been there. Now, we have two classes under our belt that have experienced the Grand Nationals, so we know what to expect this time," Suriano said.
They qualified for Nationals this year after winning the Bands of America 2024 Regional Championship.
So, with goodbye hugs and their bags packed, the students were ready to be the best they can be and showcase who they are.
"I can wholeheartedly say it's not about the placement, it never is. It's not about the Numerics or numbers, it's about the process and experience that these kids get to go through and I have no doubt that it's going to be fulfilling," Dr. Sexton said.
"To my peers, just have fun, I mean, enjoy the moment, it's a really exciting crowd. Hopefully we get to perform at finals and that's probably the best crowd you'll ever have, you'll live with that memory forever," Olaoia said. "To our parents and directors, just thank you so much for everything, we couldn't be here without you guys and your support."
The students have about a 24-hour drive until they get to Indianapolis.
Many were cheering the students on as the departed the high school. A lot of the students told 8 On Your Side they hope to perform at Finals.
