ILLINOIS — Warm and sunny weather is expected for most of the week, as temperatures in the low 60s are forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

Monday has a high of 64, Tuesday a high of 63, Wednesday a high of 64, Thursday a high of 63 and Friday a high of 56. Wednesday and Thursday could be breezy, with gusts up to 20 mph on Wednesday, according to the weather service.

The weather service said that a "weak cold front" could bring a few showers on Thursday night into Friday.

The weekend looks to have highs in the 50s, but it will be sunny and dry again, according to the current forecast.

Although the Chicago area hasn't seen much snow yet this season, the weather service's Winter Weather Preparedness week was last week.

The weather service discussed the timing of how it gives winter weather forecasts. At five to seven days out, the forecast shows general patterns only. A location could vary by two to three states, and timing could vary by one to two days.

Only within 12 to 24 hours of an approaching winter storm can a detailed forecast be given, according to the weather service. Location could be given within a county, and snow amounts could be forecast within an inch or two.

The weather services issues three types of alerts when winter weather is approaching: a winter weather advisory, a winter storm warning or a blizzard warning. An advisory is for "potentially dangerous" winter weather within the next 12 to 36 hours.

A winter storm warning is for "dangerous winter weather" within the next 12 to 36 hours, with considerable travel problems. A blizzard warning is for "severe winter weather" within the next 12 to 36 hours, and travel is not advised.
