Texas clears state-appointed Houston ISD superintendent of wrongdoing in charter school funding

J.Martin48 min ago

The Texas Education Agency has released a report clearing Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles of allegations related to the misuse of state funds . Miles was accused of diverting Texas taxpayer dollars to charter schools in Colorado connected to his charter school network, which operates nationally.

"The TEA's 29-page report found no evidence of inappropriate use of funds. Miles had maintained from the beginning that there was no misuse, and the report backs that up," James Barragán from The Texas Tribune explains.

However, Barragán notes that this hasn't entirely quelled concerns in Houston: "There's still dissatisfaction about the district's direction under Miles' leadership, particularly around a more rigid, military-style education approach."

Miles was appointed by the TEA last year – and while the report may clear his name, the controversy reflects ongoing tensions surrounding the state's takeover of Houston schools.
