After a night of heavy rain and high winds that knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses in New Jersey, weather conditions will steadily improve Wednesday for one of the busiest travel days of the year ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

The worst of the storm system that moved into the region Tuesday is over, the National Weather Service said this morning. Rain is tapering off this morning and any minor flooding steadily subsiding.

Several spots along the Jersey Shore and in North Jersey recorded more than 2 inches of rain between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Wind gusts of nearly 50 mph were reported along the Jersey Shore in Sea Girt and in Vernon Township in Sussex County. More than 7,200 home and businesses across the state remained without power as of 6:30 a.m.

A coastal flood advisory remains in effect for Ocean, Monmouth and Middlesex counties until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

Following the stormy weather, expect a mild and breezy day on Wednesday with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures rising to the upper 50s.

Clouds will clear out for Thanksgiving Day as temperatures climb to the low- to mid-50s. Winds could linger and cause some issues for the giant balloons in the New York and Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parades.

Cooler temperatures arrive Friday evening, with nighttime lows in the 20s. Highs on Saturday are expected to be in the low 40s.
