Thanksgiving 2023: What’s open/what’s closed, service adjustments on Thursday, Friday

Most government services and offices will be closed Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday, and transit will run on Sunday schedules. But what about the day after? Many government offices do take the Friday after Thanksgiving as a holiday, keeping offices closed for a four-day weekend. Always check before you head out. Here’s a list of various services and offices that are closed and on which days.

Federal offices and courts: Closed Thursday, open Friday. The stocks and bond markets are closed Thursday, and open on Friday, but close early.

Oregon and Washington state offices and courts: Closed Thursday. Most Oregon offices are closed Friday as well, including the Oregon Employment Department and the Department of Motor Vehicles. State of Washington offices are closed Friday in celebration of Native American Heritage Day .

of Portland and Vancouver, as well as Clark and Multnomah county offices, and Metro regional center will close offices Thursday and Friday.

U.S. Postal Service offices: Closed and no regular mail service Thursday.

Most bank branches: Closed Thursday.

Transit:

  • TriMet buses, MAX and streetcar are running on Sunday schedules on Thursday.

  • Westside Express Service (WES) has no service Thursday.

  • C-Tran is running on Sunday schedules Thursday.

  • Portland Aerial Tram has no service Thursday.

  • Portland parking meters: Free Thursday except in city parks that regularly charge for parking.

    Oregon Zoo: Is open and running the Zoolights Festival. Tickets required in advance.

    Oregon Museum of Science and Industry: Closed Thursday. Open Friday.

    Libraries:

    Multnomah County Libraries are closed Thursday. All library branches will close at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

    Washington County Library branches are closed Thursday, many are also closed Friday. Check with your local branch: www.wccls.org/dates-closed

    Clackamas County libraries are closed Thursday but open Friday; www.clackamas.us/lib

    Oregon Zoo Turkey Trot

    Runners can choose from a 4-mile run, the Youth Trot or Diaper Dash during this annual event. Runners and walkers welcome. Start at the Oregon Zoo parking lot, run through the International Rose Garden and finish on the zoo grounds. Costumes are encouraged. Some of the money raised benefits the Oregon Zoo. Attendance is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

    Ridgefield Turkey Trot

    Ridgefield Public Schools is hosting a fun run that includes a family-friendly 5K walk/run and a more challenging 10K run starting at Union Ridge Elementary School. Proceeds benefit the Ridgefield Public Schools Foundation and the Ridgefield Family Resource Center.

    Clark County Turkey Trot

    Each year Clark County hosts a fun run on Thanksgiving to benefit area food charities. The Turkey Trot has two race day options: a 5k walk/run and a 10k run. Both races begin at 9 a.m. and take place along the same course. All age groups are welcome to participate. Snacks including bagels, donuts, bananas, etc., and coffee will be provided. Special prizes awarded to runners dressed in wild, fun, or Thanksgiving-themed costumes.

    West Linn

    Families are invited to this 3.8-mile fun run along mostly bark and dirt trails inside Mary S. Young Park. Half-mile kids’ trot also available.

    Also, if you’d like to get outside and work off some calories after those holiday meals, Oregon State Parks is once again offering “Green Friday” Nov. 24, with waived day-use parking fees in the 24 parks that are open and charge for parking on that day. Details here: stateparks.oregon.gov .
