BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – Hundreds of vintage cars rolled into Downtown Binghamton yesterday before continuing their great race up the East Coast.

Binghamton welcomed the Great Race to downtown, which included 135 antique cars, who are racing from Kentucky to Maine.

Hundreds of people lined the streets to watch each car pull up to the stopping point.

Binghamton is just one of the 17 stops on the 2,300 journey, with some of the cars dating back to 1916.

The chair of the event, Robin Alpaugh, says even though it's a race, it's not about going fast.

"They get their maps and their instructions in the morning, there's checkpoints on the way. You don't want to be going too fast or too slow. Obviously, you don't want to miss a turn, there's points taken off there. A perfect score will get you an ace, and that's kind of what you're shooting for, a perfect score of the day. I've said this many times, we are a car community, I do believe that. And you can tell by the crowds here today, the weather isn't perfect but there is a ton of people here," says Alpaugh.

Cars were on display throughout downtown, and you could go into the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena to talk with the drivers once they arrived.

Alpaugh says Binghamton isn't included in next year's race, but he's hopeful that Binghamton will once again be a host city.
