CHICAGO — WGN Traffic Reporter Brhett Vickery is bringing you the latest update on Phase 2 of the Kennedy Expressway Rehab Project.

A lot of viewers have been writing emails to Brhett with questions about the project. Most of them mainly asking one question: What's the holdup?

After speaking with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), here's five things you need to know:

What is REVLAC?

The Reversible Lane Access Control System (REVLAC) is currently being installed.

IDOT spokesperson Maria Castaneda says the system not only controls the gates, but all the components behind the gates. In other words, the seven and a half miles of fiber optics, all the connections, cables and cameras. Not only to control with each individual box that's along the seven and a half miles, but also there's four free standing controls that everything works in sync with.

In addition, it all has to connect with Schaumburg, which is the main office.

What does "late fall" mean?

IDOT says they are on track to be finished by "late fall."

According to IDOT spokesperson Maria Castaneda, this is all weather dependent. IDOT typically does not put an actual timeline on the project until they get closer to the completion date.

IDOT promises to make an announcement when they have the exact date.

Where are the construction workers?

Because the REVLAC is being installed, more tech work, rather than roadwork, is happening now.

IDOT spokesperson Maria Castaneda says because you do have the concrete wall, where the workers are typically working alongside, you won't see them on a daily basis.

Castaneda also explained that a lot of the roadwork happens during overnight hours.

Why were some allowed to use express lanes during the DNC?

Spokesperson Maria Castaneda says IDOT worked with the Secret Service during the Democratic National Convention and allowed them limited access.

What is taking so long with this part of the project?

IDOT spokesperson Maria Castaneda says IDOT is taking their time installing REVLAC because it is very important for everyone's safety.

Castaneda explains the system needs to be functioning correctly every time it's tested. They need to make sure the gates are closing properly to prevent someone from entering in the wrong direction. She says safety is number one priority, so it is important that all connections are installed and working appropriately.
