The northern lights dazzled across Milwaukee and Madison this past weekend
Any glimpses of the aurora borealis in Wisconsin are usually reserved for the northern parts of the state. But Wisconsinites from Milwaukee to Madison were treated to a dazzling light show Sunday evening, as strong geomagnetic activity brought the northern lights to skies statewide.
Several Milwaukeeans reported pink-green aurora sightings from Atwater Park, while northern Wisconsinites glimpsed vivid red hues dancing across the sky.
Here are some of the best photos Wisconsinites captured of the aurora borealis this past weekend and when you might be able to see them next.

When will the northern lights be visible in Wisconsin again?
It's unknown if and when we'll next see a northern lights display as expansive as Sunday night in Wisconsin.
Northern lights are a result of geomagnetic storms in space, which are caused by eruptions of solar material. When these storms are severe enough, the aurora may be visible across the northern United States, including Wisconsin.
The Space Weather Prediction Center tracks these solar eruptions and generally issues a geomagnetic storm watch a few days in advance of expected aurora borealis sightings.
The SWPC does not currently have any active northern lights watches, but you can keep on eye on its space weather updates to see the latest information on upcoming geomagnetic storms.
