‘The Sims’ Movie Is on the Way With a ‘Barbie’ Star Attached
As The Sims prepares to celebrate its 25th anniversary, the creators of the iconic video game have announced that the franchise will be turned into a movie.
"The Hollywood rumors are true!" said game publisher Electronic Arts in a recent press release . "We're VERY excited to share that in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, our team is working on a film based on The Sims."
Details on The Sims movie cast or its production schedule are still all unknown. EA said it's "too early to share more," but teased that there will be updates when the game marks its 25th birthday (which is officially Feb. 4, 2025).

What is The Sims movie about?
Until we learn more, fans can only speculate on the plot of the upcoming movie.
The Sims is one of the bestselling video game series of all time, with nearly 200 million copies sold worldwide . There have been four mainline games released-The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3 and The Sims 4 (easy to remember)-and many, many expansion packs, as dedicated fans' bank accounts are aware.
As for the plot of the video game-well, that's mainly up to players. It's a life-simulation game where players can customize characters, build houses, go to school, embark on careers and start families. Expansion packs (such as a recent one entitled Lovestruck) add more game mechanics and locations that spice up the world players already know and love.
However, that doesn't mean there isn't background and lore like in any other video game. There are fan-favorite, pre-made characters such as Bella Goth and Don Lothario, and even a "language" called "Simlish" which all the Sims speak.
Some people speculate the film will be more about the concept of Sims than the actual lore. Reddit user klapaucius_ replied in one comment thread , "To be honest, while it's fun to imagine a movie involving characters from the Sims, I feel that it probably won't be set in any of the games in particular, but more like a "what if you had someone controlling your every move" type of story and turn it into a trashy horror/comedy movie. I'll still watch it though haha."
Another user, itrashcannot, commented , "The only way this'll work [is] if the movie's about a Sim becoming self-aware but that's literally just Barbie."
Is Margot Robbie in The Sims movie?
Cast details on The Sims movie haven't been made public-if they have even cast anyone-but we know which companies are producing it. The Sims team from Electronics Arts is stepping in alongside Vertigo Entertainment and LuckyChap, Margot Robbie's production company.
LuckyChap notably helped produce Barbie in 2023, which Robbie starred in. It also partnered with Amazon MGM Studios on Saltburn in late 2023 and My Old Ass, a recent Sundance film starring Aubrey Plaza.
However, we don't yet know if Robbie will star in the movie herself, and she doesn't star in everything her production company works on.

Since we don't have cast information on The Sims movie yet, fans are having fun tossing around ideas as to who could star in it. One sect of the fanbase, which is convinced the film will include specific Sims game lore and not just the general concept, has opinions about who should be playing well-known characters that have appeared in the games for decades.
Reddit user SSpotions even made a " fancast "-with Eva Longoria as Bella Goth, Jude Law as Mortimer Goth, Constance Wu as Mary Sue Pleasant, Kevin Hart as Darren Dreamer and more.
What is the release date for The Sims movie?
No release date has been announced for The Sims movie. However, more details should come in early 2025 around the 25th birthday of the first game in the series. Since the movie hasn't gone into production yet, it seems unlikely it would hit theaters before 2026.
Who is the director of The Sims movie?
The director of The Sims movie will be Kate Herron, who is known for directing and executive producing the first season of Marvel Studios' Loki. She's also directed episodes of Netflix's Sex Education and HBO's The Last of Us.
Herron co-writes the script along with Briony Redman, who she worked with on Doctor Who. The pair will also serve as executive producers on the movie.
