The stats that put Steelers in company of Steel Curtain, thinking postseason

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Steelers have the No. 1 scoring defense in the NFL after Sunday's home opener, a 20-10 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.

The vaunted defense has allowed 10, 6 and 10 points per outing over the season's first three weeks.

It's the first time in 51 years that Pittsburgh has held opponents to 10 or fewer points in the first three weeks, putting the current crop in the company of the 1973 Steelers, which featured Hall of Famers Mel Blount, Joe Greene and Jack Ham.

• The season is only three weeks old, but the Steelers have put themselves in excellent position to make the playoffs.

Teams that start 3-0 have reached the playoffs 63.9 percent of the time since 1990.

This is Pittsburgh's first three-game winning streak to start the year since 2020, and the eighth time the franchise has done it since 1970.

Among seven previous 3-0 starts in that span, Pittsburgh reached the conference title game three times and Super Bowl three times (XLIII, XIV, XIII).

• The Steelers allowed LA 168 total yards, the franchise's fewest yards allowed since Week 2 of 2011 against the Seattle Seahawks (164).

• In the past two seasons, Pittsburgh is 11-1 when it scores 17 or more points.

• The Steelers snapped a three-game losing streak in home openers Sunday at Acrisure Stadium. Head coach Mike Tomlin's home opener record is 12-6.

• Linebacker TJ Watt and defensive lineman Cameron Heyward recorded sacks Sunday.

Watt, the franchise's record holder with 99.5 career sacks, has the highest total in the NFL since 2017.

Heyward has 81.5 career sacks, the most by a Steelers' defensive lineman and second-most among active NFL DTs.
