The Strand's 'The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberly!'
The Strand Theater Company launches its 17th consecutive season with a December delight: "The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberly," by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon. It is directed by Strand newcomer, Jalice Ortiz-Corral, and runs from Dec. 6 – 22, 2024.
Baltimore's premier women-centric theatre company, the Strand produced " Miss Bennet " in December 2020, also written by Gunderson and Melcon. While Miss Bennet was a yuletide sequel to " Pride and Prejudice ," depicting the newly wed Darcys' Christmas gathering on the ground floor of Pemberly, The Wickhams brings audiences downstairs to the servants' quarters for their own celebration.
"Mrs. Reynolds, a no-nonsense housekeeper; Cassie, an eager new maid; and Brian, a lovesick footman, are bustling with preparations for holiday guests," describes the press release. "But their work is interrupted by the midnight arrival of the definitely not invited Mr. Wickham – Lydia's rogue of a husband and Mr. Darcy's sworn enemy."
The Strand Theater Company launched in 2007, establishing itself as champions for challenging and provocative theater that celebrates women's diverse voices and perspectives, bringing together the creative talents of all genders as artists, technicians, and administrators. The Strand has presented over 60 full-length plays, including 17 World Premieres; offered 75% of the artistic positions on productions to women (playwrights, directors, designers, stage managers, and actors); provided affordable theater space to other organizations and independent artists; and is active as a small business in the Hamilton-Lauraville Main Street community.
