The third historic home has been moved in the Historic District of Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — On Thursday morning, the Columbus Historic Foundation moved another historic home to the Historic District of Columbus.

The home was moved across the street to be joined with the two historic homes from Westville that were relocated to the Columbus Historic District.

The "Promenade House" was originally built in 1880. The home was used in 1975 as part of the bicentennial celebration of the country. This was when the entire Chattahoochee promenade park area was developed. The home was a main fixture to the project.

The home took two hours to move. Justin Krieg, the Director of Planning and Programs says this was because the house was able to move with its roof intact.

"In some cases, when you move the house, it's too wide to go down the street. We want to make sure we've got clearance for trees and things like that," Krieg says. "In a lot of cases, you've got to think about the height. "

Utility crews were brought in to raise power lines and an internet cable to clear the roof line.

As a result of this home being moved, Krieg says the physical improvements along the promenade and the construction of the outdoor plaza can be made.

"Now that we've got three houses here across the street, we're going to bring in the residential contractor and he's going to start framing up and building the additions, drawing these houses in," Krieg says. "We're going to start to see some new lumber, some new construction. And these houses are really beginning to move into their final form."

The "Promenade House" is the third home being moved in the Heritage Park/Chattahoochee Promenade project. There are two homes that still need to be moved into the Historic District.

Krieg hopes to have all homes moved in by the end of the fall season.
