These 6 Comfortable Fall Shoes Are Replacing My Summer Sandals

Unpopular opinion: Summer is my least favorite season. (There, I said it!) I thrive in cozy knits, eclectic layers, and effortlessly sleek booties . Or, perhaps it's just that my Virgo nature imparts a proclivity to the chilly season. Either way, fall is when I shine. The moment September magazine issues hit newsstands, I'm eager to swap out my tank tops for sweaters —even when the midwestern climate rudely reminds me that I'm still a few weeks away from autumn's arrival.

I start by switching my shoes for the season. Out with my strappy sandals, and in with some chic, closed-toe options . This year, I decided to opt for a careful rotation of fall shoes that are versatile enough to fit multiple occasions, from casual lunches to professional outings. I have no doubt these six styles will carry me through the rest of the season.

  • Dream Pairs Platform Sneaker , $46; amazon.com .
  • Uniqlo Padded Lace-Up Boots , $50; uniqlo.com .
  • Universal Thread Rita Mule Flats , $25; target.com .
  • Wild Fable Elsa Mary Jane Ballet Flats , $30; target.com .
  • J.Crew Factory Classic Loafers , $60 (was $148); factory.jcrew.com .
  • New York and Company Jadyn Side Zip Ankle Bootie , $45 (was $159); nordstromrack.com .
  • Dream Pairs Platform Sneaker When it comes to sneakers, I go for looks over practically. I won't be going on any hikes or extreme workouts with this pair, but I love the woven texture that's helped my lounge sets and sportier clothes look a touch more refined. I'm also just over 5 feet tall, so the 2.2-inch platform is a major plus for me.

Uniqlo Padded Lace-Up Boots I'm trading in my rubber wellies for something a little more fashionable. These Uniqlo boots feature a super soft fleece lining and are crafted from a water-repellent polyester, so I can still look chic on cold, rainy days. I especially love the neutral olive tone of these. Green is my favorite color, and I plan to sport a muted variation of it a lot this coming season.

Universal Thread Rita Mule Flats I find myself more drawn to backless shoes these days, especially when I'm running out of the house on a quick errand. I can barely feel the difference in the 1.25-inch block heel, which is a good thing since my feet give out on me pretty quickly. They're a good option for this weird transitional weather we're experiencing.

Wild Fable Elsa Mary Jane Ballet Flats Flats were big for summer, but I expect Mary Janes to be everywhere this season. This design from Wild Fable is particularly comfy, thanks to the memory foam insole. Considering the fact that it's still pretty hot here in Cincinnati, I've already started wearing them. These lightweight shoes don't make me overheat. I also love how the square toe makes my outfits look a little preppy.

J.Crew Factory Classic Loafers I'm a recent loafers convert, and I won't apologize. They're a no-fuss style that seems relaxed while still exuding the hint of sophistication I'm looking for in a shoe. I like wearing them to elevate my most casual looks. I especially like how the masculine vibe of these tailored shoes contrasts with my most feminine outfits.
