This Week in Seahawks History: Seahawks hand 49ers their first shutout loss in 27 years

This will be a weekly series throughout the season looking back on what happened for the Seattle Seahawks 40, 30, 20, and 10 years ago this week.

Only three games to go over this time since the 2014 team had a very early bye week that season. Still, we've got a 3-0 week to go over including a beatdown of the San Francisco 49ers in 2004 so it's all good. Bonus points to anyone who got the Prong album reference in the title!

A week after playing the Chicago Bears at home, the Seattle Seahawks faced another Midwest foe, heading on the road to face the Minnesota Vikings . Since you can see the box score above, I don't think it's a spoiler to say that this was a Jan Stenerud game for Minnesota.

In fact, he scored the first points of the game on a 43-yard FG in the 1st Quarter as the Vikings took a 3-0 lead. Seattle pulled ahead at 7-3 on a 20-yard TD pass from Dave Krieg to Steve Largent. Most of the next 3 quarters was a FG battle between Stenerud and Norm Johnson as they traded successful FG tries. Stenerud was true from 44, 28, and 34 yards in each of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Quarters. In between those Stenerud FGs, Norm Johnson hit a 41-yarder and a 31-yarder. After Stenerud's last FG brought the Vikings within 1 point at 13-12, Seattle found the end zone again when Eric Lane broke loose for a 40-yard TD run. This put the game out of reach for Minnesota as Seattle won 20-12.

The Seahawks offense coughed the ball up 4 times. Dave Krieg was 17/27 for 222 yards, 1 TD, 3 INTs. Eric Lane had 14 carries for 113 yards and 1 TD. Steve Largent had his first big game of the 1984 season with 130 yards and 1 TD on 8 catches.

Seattle's defense helped bail out their offense with 4 turnovers and 5 sacks. Greg Gaines reeled in the only INT and had 0.5 sack. Jeff Bryant had 2.0 sacks. Jacob Green collected 1.5 sacks. Randy Edwards and Joe Nash each had 0.5 sack.

The Seahawks seemingly caught Bill Cowher's Pittsburgh Steelers at the right time as they would go on to a 12-4 record in 1994...but they couldn't get past Seattle in this game!

Seattle got out to a 7-0 lead in the 1st Quarter on a 3-yard rushing TD by Chris Warren. A spry 35-year old Gary Anderson, pretty much halfway into his career, pulled PIT closer at 7-3 with a 31-yard FG. John Kasay took the lead back to a touchdown at 10-3 with his own 31-yard FG in the 2nd Quarter. Trey Junkin, another player who would go on to have a long NFL career, caught his final NFL TD pass from 1 yard out to extend the Seahawks lead to 17-3. Kasay nailed a 40-yarder to put Seattle up 20-3 later in the quarter. Gary Anderson booted a 38-yard FG before halftime to make the score 20-6 at the break.

After a scoreless 3rd Quarter, Orland Watters picked off Neil O'Donnell and returned it 35 yards for the defensive score and a 27-6 Seahawks advantage. The Steelers cut into the lead on a 36-yard TD pass from O'Donnell to Charles Johnson to make it a 2 TD game again at 27-13. John Kasay booted a 31-yard FG for Seattle to give the Seahawks a comfortable 30-13 win and a 3-1 record in 1994. Enjoy this win while it lasts because it will be nearly 2 months until we can look at another one in 1994...

Rick Mirer was 14/24 for 166 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT and was sacked 6 times. Chris Warren had 26 carries for 126 yards and 1 TD. Brian Blades had 4 catches for 97 yards.

Seattle's defense gave up 452 yards but racked up 4 turnovers. Robert Blackmon, Rufus Porter, Eugene Robinson, and Orlando Watters all had 1 INT with Watters taking his all the way back for a defensive TD.

In a fun note, the Steelers defense featured future Seahawks Legends Levon Kirkland and Chad Brown who had 1.0 sack for PIT in their loss.

I'm sorry Dennis Erickson. I know you're a former Seahawks coach, but damn do I enjoy a butt-whooping of the San Francisco 49ers!

Josh Brown started the scoring domination with a 35-yard FG in the 1st Quarter to give Seattle the 3-0 advantage. Shaun Alexander then took over, scoring 3 times in the 1st and 2nd Quarters while only gaining 5 total yards on those TDs. He had 2 1-yard rushing TDs with a 3-yard TD catch from Matt Hasselbeck in between for good measure. This gave the Seahawks a commanding 24-0 lead at halftime.

Seattle wasn't done scoring short TDs either, as Itula Mili got in on the action with a 1-yard receiving TD from Hasselbeck. Josh Brown booted a 28-yard FG to end the scoring as the Seahawks rolled to a 34-0 laugher.

Matt Hasselbeck was 21/30 for 254 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT. Shaun Alexander had 19 carries for 52 yards and 2 rushing TDs. He added 4 catches for 22 yards and 1 receiving TD. Future 49er Darrell Jackson had 7 catches for 87 yards and Bobby Engram was right behind him with 4 catches for 95 yards.

Seattle's defense was stifling, giving up a measly 175 total yards. The pair of Kens each had INTs with 1 apiece for Lucas and Hamlin. Chike Okeafor, Cedric Woodward, and Rocky Bernard all chipped in 1.0 sack.

On the other side, future Seahawks Legend Julian Peterson had 0.5 sack for the 49ers.

This was the 49ers' first shutout loss since 1977, snapping an NFL record 420-game scoring streak.
