This week: Serious subjects and macaroons

Nov. 18—So our cover story this week is a serious one.

What will President-elect Donald Trump's administration mean for New Mexico? Our report was part of a broader effort Journal reporters took this week to lay the foundation for what issues we'll be examining in the next four years.

Politics. Immigration. Oil and gas. Trade. Construction. Agriculture.

Republicans now also control the House and Senate. New Mexico's entire congressional delegation is in the minority.

Meanwhile, back at home, the New Mexico Legislature now has a female majority. There are 28 new representatives and senators in the Roundhouse, which is 25% of the Roundhouse. We introduce the new policymakers and have some interesting facts about a few of them — one of our new representatives is potty training a cavapoo and another is a Stars Wars nerd.

However, my favorite story in this week's edition is a check-in on a mother and daughter who took a shot at starting a macaron business.

Mother Tami O'Bryan and daughter Victoria Ruggles opened Le Macaron French Pastries two years ago. They franchised the pastry shop, which was founded by another mother-daughter duo, after finding it when they were purchasing macaroons for Ruggles' bridal shower.

O'Bryan and Ruggles had originally planned to expand around Albuquerque. But those plans are on hold. Not because of inflation, supply chain or workforce issues or crime.

Ruggles is expecting twins.

I hope we struck a good balance of serious and fun this week.
