Thousands of mail-in ballots still to be counted in 50th State Senate district race, separated by only 548 votes
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Thousands of uncounted mailed-in and affidavit ballots will decide whether the race for the 50th State Senate District will require a hand recount.

At the end of Election Night, Democrat Chris Ryan led Republican Nick Paro by 548 votes, only 0.35% of the total vote.
If the margin is under 0.5% of the total vote, state law requires a hand recount of the district's ballots. First, there are thousands of ballots to count and more to consider counting.
According to the Onondaga County Board of Elections, there are 3,200 mail-in ballots returned but not yet counted. Another 4,000 affidavit ballots countryside will have to be sorted by State Senate district and validated. Additionally, a handful of mail-in ballots postmarked on Election Day and delivered before next Tuesday will be counted.
Once Boards of Elections in Onondaga and Oswego Counties have unofficial results for their portions of the 50th State Senate District, the State Board of Elections will produce a combined result. If the margin is under 0.5%, a mandatory hand recount will be ordered.
If a recount is ordered, a winner might not be determined until December.
