Three in-house candidates, plus a UND Police Department officer, among finalists for Grand Forks police chief
Nov. 8—GRAND FORKS — Three in-house candidates and a UND Police Department patrol commander who also is on the City Council are among six finalists to become Grand Forks' next chief of police.
Mark Nelson retired on Sept. 20, ending a 36-year career within the department. The search for his replacement has been ongoing since.
Friday, the department announced the six finalists, including:
* William Macki, a deputy chief of police for the GFPD.
* Jeremy Moe, a lieutenant for the GFPD.
* Derik Zimmel, a lieutenant for the GFPD.
* Daniel Weigel, a patrol commander for the UND Police Department. Weigel also is on the Grand Forks City Council, serving as vice president.
* Jason Freedman, a police captain and SWAT commander at Madison, Wisconsin.
* Robert Jones, chief of police at Woodstock, Georgia, and an adjunct professor at Columbus State University.
At present, Lt. Dwight Love is serving as the department's interim chief. He took over the duties in September and will continue to serve in that role until the search for Nelson's replacement concludes.
Interviews for the finalists will take place Nov. 18-19, with a decision to come shortly thereafter, Mayor Brandon Bochenski said Friday.
