MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) - Happy Thursday morning, mid-Michigan! We are nearing the weekend. If you're up with us, check out these five stories we're following right now.

  • Flint City Council faces a Dec. 31 deadline to vote on how to spend $23 million . This week, council voted to approve $36,000 for the organization, Involved Dad, for mental health support. People who live in Flint said it barely touches the surface of the work that needs to be done by council, though. More American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds could be given out at Monday's council meeting.
  • A man wanted for an deadly shooting in Bay City in October has been arrested. Police identified 19-year-old Jaimari Campbell as a person of interest in a shooting on 3rd Street. Officers found a 26-year-old Saginaw man with injuries. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. Campbell was arrested Wednesday and police are investigating the shooting as a homicide.
  • President Joe Biden is set to address the nation this morning. His remarks come after President-Elect Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election over Vice President Kamala Harris. She conceded in a speech on Wednesday. Biden is set to speak at 11 a.m. EST from the White House Rose Garden.
  • The court battle over the four lakes drained by the 2020 dam failures is moving forward. A hearing on the Heron Cove Association's appeal is set for Dec. 11. The group is fighting the special assessment that would collectively cost property owners $217 million over 40 years. The legal battle has led to the suspension of work at three of the four dams. Work at the Sanford Dam is likely to stop at the end of January.
  • The Saginaw Soup Pitch competition is today at SVRC Marketplace. For $5, you can vote for your favorite small business idea from local entrepreneurs and get free samples from vendors. This year, the five people with their pitches will each get a cash prize. It starts at 6 p.m.
