Islanders take third in A2 meet to qualify; Johnsen's state bound for girlsLINCOLN – The Grand Island Senior High boys cross country team earned a berth to the state meet.

The Islanders had three medalists to help them finish third in the Class A, District 2 Meet at Pioneers Park in Lincoln.

Kaden Boltz led Grand Island by taking fourth at 16:24.28, while Jorge Carpio finished ninth at 17:05.36 and Ruben Caceres Perez came in 10th at 17:10.62. Those efforts helped the Islanders score 71 points.

On the girls side, Katie Johnsen also earned a state berth for GISH after taking seventh at 20:32.96. The Islanders finished fourth with 95 points.

Northwest's Chapman becomes four-time state qualifierOVERTON – Olivia Chapman became a four-time state cross country qualifier for the Northwest cross country team.

The Viking senior qualified to the state meet after finishing eighth at 21:15.20 in the Class B, District Meet in Overton.

Chapman became the first Northwest four-time qualifier since Megan Billington accomplished that feat from 2011-14.

The Viking girls finished seventh with 100 points, while Northwest boys finished sixth 115 points. Caden Sheffield was the high finisher after taking 21st with an 18:27.06 time.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Northwest goes 2-0 to start Central ConferenceYORK – The Northwest volleyball team started 2-0 at the Central Conference Tournament on Thursday.

The Class B, No. 9 Vikings grabbed a 25-3, 25-16 win over Schuyler and a 16-25, 25-15, 27-25 win over York.

Against Schuyler, Ava Janulewicz led the way with four kills and seven ace serves. Kenna Bowman dished out 17 assists and had three ace serves. Jacey Knapp had 10 digs.

Against York, Janulewicz led the Vikings with 13 kills, while Kelsey Knapp added nine, Tessa Scheer chipped in eight and Izzy Buhrman had seven. Bowman had 36 assists.

NW coach Lindsey Harders said she was happy to get the two wins.

"Big win for us tonight over York. We served aggressively which really helped us keep York out of system," Harders said. "I felt like our hitters did a good job of executing the game plan. We hit the shots that were open. I thought our serve receive really did a nice job too."

Heartland Lutheran goes 1-1 in Goldenrod Conference TourneyCENTRAL CITY – The Heartland Lutheran volleyball team went 1-1 during the first day of the Goldenrod Conference Tournament.

The Red Hornets opened with a 25-8, 25-14, 16-25, 25-16 win over Elba, then fell to Nebraska Christian 25-16, 25-21, 25-16.

GICC snaps five-match losing streak with winThe Grand Island Central Catholic volleyball team snapped a five-match streak.

The Crusaders earned a 25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 26-24 win over O'Neill St. Mary's Thursday in O'Neill.
