BAY CITY, MI – Incumbent Republican Tim Beson has retained his seat as the representative for Michigan's 96th House District after defeating Democratic challenger Rudy Howard in the Nov. 5 general election.

Beson tallied 31,132 votes to Howard's 20,466, according to unofficial vote totals reported by The Associated Press.

The AP called the race at 2:27 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6.

With the reelection bid, Beson secured another two-year term in the state house, representing a portion of Bay County. He has held the position since 2021.

In a questionnaire submitted by the League of Women Voters, Beson said he ran for reelection to "continue the work I have started in the Legislature that impacts the residents of Bay County."

Beson said he plans to use grants and financial incentives to improve the quality and equitable access to public education.

"We should also increase teacher salaries to make the profession more attractive and competitive," he wrote. "Offer comprehensive benefits packages, including healthcare, retirement plans, and housing assistance for teachers in high-need areas. I like the idea of establishing partnerships with universities to create teacher residency programs, offering aspiring teachers hands-on experience while completing their education."

Beson also wrote about plans to retain residents.

"Our state is currently investing heavily in EV's, renewable energy projects such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. My district is largely rural, and I support promoting sustainable farming practices that reduce carbon emissions and improve soil health," he wrote. "There should be more of an effort in public education campaigns that raise awareness about climate change and encourage sustainable practices among residents."
