DALLAS: The Department of Physics at Misericordia University and the American Association of Physics Teachers Central Pennsylvania Section are presenting the free public lecture, “The Revised Medical College Admission Test and the Next Generation Science Standards: Implications for Science Education’’ from 8-9 p.m. on Friday in Dudrick and Muth Rooms 216-217 of Insalaco Hall on the upper campus.

Robert C. Hilborn, Ph.D., associate executive officer of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), will deliver the keynote address. The medical community has reviewed and revised the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in the last few years. The test focuses on student competencies. Similar themes are included in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for K-12 science education. Dr. Hilborn will address the two developments and discuss the implications for the content and pedagogy for science education at both the high school and college levels.

NEWPORT TWP.: The Newport Township Lions Club will be honoring the Newport Township Police Department for its 100 years of service at 7 p.m. on March 26 at the Alden Manor, East Kirmar Avenue.

The guest speakers for the event will be Senator John Yudichak and District Magistrate Donald Whittaker.

The public is welcome to attend the event. The price is $15 per person and includes a buffet-style dinner and non-alcoholic drinks. Reservations are due by 5 p.m. on Sunday and can be made by calling John Zyla at 570-735-1714.

WYOMING VALLEY: United Way of Wyoming Valley is accepting nominations for the Rose Brader Community Service Award. The award recognizes an adult volunteer in the Wyoming Valley area, 18 years of age or older, for their special volunteer efforts. The award is named in honor of the late Rose Brader, who was employed by United Way of Wyoming Valley for 31 years and provided extensive volunteer service to numerous health and human service organizations. The award recipient will be honored at United Way’s Day of Caring and awards event scheduled for May 9 at the Genetti Hotel and Conference Center.

Nomination forms can be obtained through United Way of Wyoming Valley’s website at www.unitedwaywb.org at the bottom right hand corner under Resources, or by emailing a request to [email protected] or calling United Way at 570-270-9109. Deadline for submitting nominations is April 4.
