LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Donald Trump did something no other Republican presidential candidate has done since 1892. He won Starr County on the border in South Texas. It has a population of roughly 66,000, which is about 97 percent Hispanic, and includes Rio Grande City. Trump won 57.7 percent of the vote . President Biden won the county in 2020, with about 52 percent. Hillary Clinton won 79 percent in 2016. The San Antonio Express-News reports Starr county had the longest Democratic voting streak of any county in the United States, started when it went for Democrat William Jennings Bryan in 1896. President William McKinley won that election and a re-match in 1900. Starr County is west of Hidalgo County, population of about 870,000, which includes McAllen. Trump also won Hidalgo County, with about 51 percent, part of a sweep across much of South Texas that has historically been won by Democrats.- for our interactive map, where you can click on every county in the state to see results. This matches trends seen elsewhere across the nation, with exit polls showing Trump increased support received from Hispanic voters. NBC News reports exit polling data shows Trump received 45 percent of the Hispanic/Latino vote this year, compared to 32 percent in 2020. Vice President Harris drew 53 percent of the Hispanic vote nationally, compared to President Biden winning 65 percent in 2020.
