Nov. 11 (UPI) - President-elect Donald Trump tapped Rep. Elise Stefanik as his pick for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Trump reportedly offered Stefanik, R-N.Y., the job Sunday CNN initially reported , with CBS News and NBC News also confirming, citing unnamed sources.

"I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter," Trump said in a statement.

Stefanik has represented New York's 21st Congressional District since 2015.

The 40-year-old has been a strong ally of Trump dating back to his first term as president.

"I am truly honored to earn President Trump's nomination to serve in his Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations," Stefanik said in an exclusive statement to the New York Post.

"During my conversation with President Trump, I shared how deeply humbled I am to accept his nomination and that I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate."

The native of Albany, N.Y. in 2021 took over as chairwoman of the House Republican Conference from former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., after Cheney was removed from her role for criticizing Trump.

Cheney ultimately lost her re-election bid to the U.S. House last year and publicly supported Vice President Kamala Harris ' presidential campaign.
