Turkey talk: Broadwater Elementary students on all things Thanksgiving

J.Green3 months ago

Students at Broadwater Elementary School in Billings might not know much about the first Thanksgiving , other than it was a very long time ago.

But ask them how their families are celebrating this year and what they have to be thankful for, and they’ll rattle off a range of things from chores to church to good home cooking.

Earlier this week, the Gazette asked Broadwater kindergarten and first-grade students to share what they know about America’s first holiday tradition.

What’s Thanksgiving all about?

“It’s because you can really get a lot of people here so you can really gather around a lot of people for Thanksgiving.”

— Rylan, 5.

What do you like to do for the holiday?

“Go to aunt Shawna’s.”

— Myah, 5.

What are turkeys like?

“When turkeys get scared, their face goes down and they try to hide.”

— Adam, 5.

Why are they hiding?

“I never cooked a turkey before because I could get burned.”

— Kinley, 5.

What does your family like to do for the holiday?

“They like to wear turkey costumes. Like my little cousin does and I don’t even know if I even have a turkey dress.”

Where do you get a turkey?

“The garden.”

How do you cook it?

“I don’t know how to.”

— Teresa, 5.

What does your family do on Thanksgiving?

“We like to get really ready like the day before. Then we get games out and everything fun. And my cousin’s birthday is on Thanksgiving.”

What do you like to eat for dinner?

“I like mashed potatoes and turkey and corn. I did not like stuffing.”

— Joslyn, 7.

What’s the best part of Thanksgiving?

“The turkey. Whenever my parents say ‘it’s turkey time,’ I just run to the table. I don’t like gravy.”

How do you cook the turkey?

“Well, if it was alive, I’d really just hold it. ... And I’d cut off its head and take its feathers off with one hand so I could cook a turkey.”

— Tarran, 6.

What does your family do for Thanksgiving and what do you know about the holiday?

“We kind of put up trees and we don’t really buy turkeys. We have that book of what actually did happen. The turkeys jumped over the fence and probably got eaten by bears because there’s bears everywhere. The rest of what I know is there’s presents under the tree.”

Do you know the story of the first Thanksgiving?

“I don’t know. That was a long, long time ago. That’s all I know.”

— Axcten, 6.

What do you know about turkeys?

“I know they can’t fly. And I know they have bones and they taste delicious.”

What are you thankful for this year?

“I’m thankful for my new dog, Barney, and the other one’s name is Ruffy because he ruffs a lot.”

— Greigh, 6.

What do you like about Thanksgiving?

“I like the food. My mom can make chocolate cupcakes.”

What will you and your family be thankful for this year?

“Chores. I do the dishes and I undo the washer. And sometimes, I do my little sister and my little brother’s rooms, too.”

— Asher, 6.
